When he was six years old, his mother returned to Korea due to family discord and later passed away, preventing them from ever meeting again. After graduating from middle school, he worked for his father before joining the sign-making company "Takematsu Garbou," where he learned painting techniques and began his journey as an artist. In 1961, he was selected for the "Kyoten" exhibition and left the company the following year to pursue a full-time career as a painter. In 1964, he married and had four children. However, in 1979, a fire tragically claimed the lives of his wife and three of his children, profoundly altering his artistic style. Following this tragedy, Matsumura shifted his focus to universal themes such as "motherhood" and "childhood," deeply exploring the sorrow and love inherent in the human experience.
